Maybe the two combined and other machines were used to build many of the ancient wonders. Movies like "Lord of the Rings" and "Kingdom of Heaven" capture the destructive ingenuity, so why wouldn't they have had constructive innovations (after all, how did they move all those stones for the engines/catapults/trebuchets around?)
