Carbon Credit Tax

EU to force US airlines to pay carbon credit tax by 2012. http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/04/post.html European airlines say it is unfair if they are the only ones forced to pay the tax. At least they get to vote or have some say and their citizens use the proceeds. US carriers will find themselves being taxed without representation and with no benefits. Sort of like the British tax on the Americas that led to tea being dumped into Boston harbor.

How is that different from paying sales tax in a state you do not reside in... that is taxation without representation. Is this any different?

You still have representation, though limited to the federal level. Also you are not expected to pay state income tax, or property tax, on your one residence in both states (not yet). The problem with unbalanced taxes on airlines and other international businesses is why an international standard for airline taxation was created. Now the European Union wants to abandon a universal standard and have a free for all on taxes. Their argument is that the environment is more important than international laws and standards. Maybe it is or maybe it isn’t, but few are gullible enough to think that the new taxes will stop with this one.
